My baby girl is
growing up! She’s 3 now and ready for a
BIG girl room. And God help me since this new transition means a room for her
upstairs. It’s actually the best timing since her lil’ sister Audrey will be
here soon! What a perfect way to prepare Miss L to really be a big girl before
the life-altering event of a new baby. So with that said, I just give myself a lil’ pep talk and try not
to shed a tear or two as I graduate my sweet lil’ baby into her full on big
girl room that so perfectly represents Miss Independences’ – independence.
Ok, ok – it
wasn’t all totally my idea…Landry is the one who keeps asking if she can move upstairs as she wants to
sleep in a big bed now. Ok, she’s
asking us – I knew it was coming…Landry’s been in her toddler bed for a while
now and she obviously knows what she wants as she always sees her bestie Miss B,
1 year her senior, sleeping in her own princess big girl bed – she’s like, “Hey,
I want that too!”
So, without a lot
of talk about what the design would be, just the simple fact that it was a big
girl room…I headed off on the adventure of finding something fun and bright to
match the big personality of Miss L. To give you a little background, Landry’s
nursery had a sweet and soft feel with pink, sage green and cream colors…I
really loved it for the baby time period but I too was looking for a bright and
cheery something different.
Audrey will be
here in June and so in an effort to not kick Landry out of her old room right
before little sister arrives - I agreed on a random Sunday afternoon to go for
it – let’s move upstairs!!
Because of the
planner that lives in me and since I already knew that this moment would be
coming soon… I had already started the foundation of the room and had been
storing it in the guest room, soon to be L’s room, closet upstairs . Luckily
the room at the heart of this project was already furnished with a queen bed,
dresser and nightstands. So the design and accent pieces were up to me (and yes
moms – I know that decisions like this will not be mine forever so I am taking
full advantage nowI) My vision included cool colors that pop with a touch of toddler sophistication if you will (ha! does
that even exist? Well, let’s just go
with it!).
So ladies….Follow
my ideas below to watch how I will turn my vision into a final product and am
able to add in some special Landry Grace accent pieces custom designed to match
the bedding I chose.
First, I started
with my bedding - a turquoise blue, apple green and white comforter with
matching shams, which are the focal point of the room. And then the designer in
me had to add a pop of color to draw in the girly flavors that I was looking to
add – so bright hot pink was incorporated in the sheets as well as wall accents
and other fun pieces.
Now I was ready to create some new wall letters and complete the room with more wall décor and a fun little find from craigslist – a vintage inspired sitting chair! After a quick trip to the fabric store (probably the fastest ever for me!) I found perfectly coordinating colors and patterns that would go great and add some dimension to the room.
I came home and layed everything out and went to town –
my color palette and inspiration are shown above.
Custom LG canvas wall letters complete and ready for hanging!
I was so excited to add these funky lamps that I found which I later added pink trim to create a little pizazz.
Next, I grabbed my paint brushes and some paint colors
to match the new room and created the above piece. This wall art was originally
purchased with a simple gold finish. Yes
– gold! Well, my vision required this piece
to pop with bold dramatic colors and so with a little paint – here is what
transpired!
The pink frame below is from Hobby Lobby and the wonderful find inside is from a shopping trip to Wimberley, Texas this past summer with my mom, aunt and sister. Love when you find little gems like that. And how cute did this accent piece turn out?!
Next, I picked up this sweet signage and thought it went
perfectly with the room. Who says you can’t add a little grey to – well just
about anything! Grey is the new neutral afterall!
And finally – one of my favorite finds…this awesome
chair. I discovered this lil’ diddy on the oh-so-popular Craigslist. I am all
about repurposing and reupholstering – so this definitely fit the description.
I painted what used to be an oak colored chair to a cool white tone and
reupholstered the fabric part to add the fun girly pattern. And then concluded
the look with a fun pop of teal in a funky throw pillow.
I love the color palette, various patterns, textures,
and fun finds as well as some old pieces of wall art turned new! What do you think? Would you dare to go bold for a new
room?
Some questions you may consider asking yourself before
you let the fun begin of transitionin your toddler’s room:
·
What look am I going for? modern,
sweet & sassy, sophisticated, themed with favorite character, etc.
·
Am I up for changing room designs every couple of years or do I want
something that will last a bit longer?
·
Do I need to get creative with space?
Is the bedroom for sleeping only for both sleeping and playtime?
·
Do we have furniture pieces that will work or do we need to seek out new pieces?
·
What is your budget? Is money is no
object? Or, would is be more fun to seek
out finds off craigslist, vintage stores, flea markets, online boutiques and
still have a fabulous new room.?
Remember, this is supposed to be FUN! Think about your son or daughter’s
personality and what inspires them too. Believe me, although I picked most of
the items out myself, I definitely kept seeing each and every design choice. She
has a bright, fun, strong minded personality and the colors and patterns
reflect her in her new room.
I wish I could have captured the moment she went to
sleep in the big girl room that night. She was so happy to have finally made it
upstairs to her own land of toddler freedom.
She has been great in her new room ever since. We were both ready and the transtion proved
to be successful! One point for Mommy and one big smile from one happy lil’
girl!
